DIY Window Cleaner (Without Ammonia)

DIY Window Cleaner (Without Ammonia)

I know, I know, there are tons of recipes out there for cleaning the windows with home made cleaners so why another one?  Mainly because I wanted to have this in the DIY section with the homemade laundry soap and home made dishwasher soap.  It seemed to fit in there lol. But also because I wanted to share the simple recipe I love to use and a few tips to go with it.

Ingredients:

  • 1 gallon of water (filtered preferably to avoid build-ups)
  • 1/4 cup of white vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
OR if you do not want to make a gallon and only put some in a small squirt bottle then...

  • 2 cups of water
  • 3 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Tips:

  1. Spray with preferred solution and then wipe the glass with a crumbled newspaper to prevent streaks. (This has been known to leave fine scratches on the glass over many uses.)
  2. Avoid washing windows when the sun is hot and shiny because the solution dries to fast leaving streaks behind.
  3. Wash one side of the glass in and up and down direction and the other side in a side by side direction so you can tell which side streaks.
  4. Avoid using Ammonia. I know a lot of glass cleaner recipes use it but if any of it every sprays in your eyes you're in for a world of hurt, along with a costly trip to the Ophthalmologist.
  5. If you HAVE to use ammonia as a class cleaner...please, for goodness sakes....DO NOT mix it with chlorine bleach. VERY TOXIC.
  6. If you buy Windex because it cleans well and you love the blue color....simple add some blue food coloring to the recipe above and voila!!

Choosing, Seasoning and Caring for Your Dutch Oven

Choosing, Seasoning and Caring for Your Dutch Oven

Guest post By Stephanie Dayle

Dutch oven cooking is a great skill for preppers to learn and a dutch oven is good thing to keep in your supplies.  Besides being just plain fun to use, a dutch oven can provide you with another option for cooking if the power is out, knowing how to use one is another step in your journey in self-reliance. It means when the power goes out instead of wondering how you will get dinner you will simply get your oven out and make dinner yourself without depending on the power company or Pizza Hut.

Keep Clean Without Running Water

This morning I woke up and did the normal routine which included checking my Facebook page. (You can join by clicking the button to the left of this article. :)

I came across a fabulous "how to" article on Mother Earth News that teaches us how to take a bath, including washing our hair, with no running water.  To be more specific, with only 7 cups (half a gallon) of water or a construction hard hat full. Below is part of her article that I have copied and pasted. I wanted to be clear that I did not write this particular section below. :) Enjoy and learn!
