Affordable Fathers Day Gifts For That Prepared Dad!!

I have been racking my brain lately trying to think of something my husband would like/want for fathers day. So in my search I am going to make a list of some cost effective items I came across. :)

This Rayovac Head Lamp gets very good reviews and is affordable.  Every man needs to be able to use both hands when camping, hiking, or just fixing things around the house that are in dark corners.

Grizzly two-person sleeping bag: This bag is Amazing! I like them for several reasons. The obvious first is to cuddle with my husband when we camp. I have also had reviews that this bag is good for a larger person as well. People often buy a sleeping bags and think they are covered. Unless you sleep in it though you do not know if you will fit in it or are comfortable in it.  The downside to a two person sleeping bag is only one person carries it. (That could be a plus for us ladies though right? :) )

Coffee!!! I don't drink much coffee anymore, but I sure love the smell of it and I do miss drinking it.  I know a lot of men who love coffee so I thought what better way to add a little love to their ruck sack than with the small things.

Straight Razor: I am going to list two razors here and you can see the price difference yourself. After checking with several men I know who use the COl. Conk they say it is worth it to buy the more expensive one because that razor can last a life time and save you a lot of money yearly in replaceable blades from the store. We all know how expensive that can be.  The first one I am listing is the entire shaving kit set and the more expensive of the two. It is a Col. Conk DOVO 506B. (Pictured on the left.)

The second blade, (pictured on the right) is a Parker SR1 Stainless Steel straight razor that uses replaceable blades. It has good reviews and is considerable cheaper than the razor listed above.  However, both would be a great addition to a BOB or camping/hunting gear.

Leather Man 830040 New Wave Multi-tool With Sheath: This tool has so many specs I can't name them here, but you can read them all when you click the link.  I do not know a man who does not love and respect Leather man tools.

Custom Leather Craft Multi-purpose tool holder: For your mans EDC need. If your man carries a Multi-purpose tool, a cell phone, and small flash light, keys and even more, then this next find will be perfect to put his Every Day Carry items in.

Bad Lands Pack: I will always include a bag of some sort on any holiday list. There for a while I had the attitude of, " Who doesn;'t own a BOB already?" Fact is, many people don't, so it will always be here :)

EDC Car Kits

We have recently been discussing what EDC means, EDC KeyRings, and 72 Hour BOB’s are.  In this article, we will be discussing what an EDC car kit means to us and to you.  We will also go over a few items that you should always have in your car and hopefully give some new ideas and perspective on the what and why’s of these items.

Now I have a small challenge for you!  Go out to your car and pull all the items out of your car. (Trunk too!) Then separate them into two piles.  The first pile being items you could use in an emergency/survival situation, and the second pile for items you can’t.  Are you beginning to realize that you might not be carrying items that you should be?  If you do have a lot of items that can help you or your family in a bad situation then hooray for you!!  Great job!!

EDCO: Every Day Carry Office Kit

A lot of people probably haven’t thought about an Every Day Carry Office (EDCO) kit.  This is most likely because people do not think about the items they carry to work everyday as EDC’s and people’s jobs can differ drastically.  While some people may carry a briefcase with pens and organizers, other people carry work gloves and tools.  So, coming up with a basic EDCO kit list can be a hard thing to do. With any EDC kit, you build it to fit your basic needs.

For me personally, no matter which kit I build or carry, I ALWAYS have my EDC Key Ring, because it covers some very basic survival necessities for me.  Things like, mini pry bar, steel precision tweezers, mini flashlight, an emergency whistle, ferro rod/striker wrapped in para-cord, screw driver keys.  You can view more about EDC Key Rings by clicking here.

I am a woman and a writer, so my needs are a little different from a man’s, but I will list a few things that go with me daily to the office.  All of these Items are carried in my purse and lap top bag and kept well-organized.  (Keeping in mind that I also have my EDC car kit and my 72 hour BOB in my trunk as well.)  At the end of this article are more links to all different types of EDC kits that are made, including a link to a long-term BOB list.

For those of us with thicker thighs, one thing we DON’T want to experience is chafing, especially if we are running or hiking with a group or family.  Men and women both experience this and after much embarrassment about this issue, I decided it was time to swallow my pride and start asking around about ways I can prevent the painful effects of chafing.  One obvious way to prevent it is to lose weight so your thighs don’t rub together. But let’s face it….we have to actually move to lose weight and even thinner people who sweat still chafe.  People carry their weight differently so even though one might be generally thin, their thighs might still touch, especially if they have muscular legs.

EDC First Aid Kit

Have you ever gone to the store to buy a first aid kit and find ten different ones and each one has a little of what you would expect ONE kit to have?  You also might notice that they are WAY over priced for the material, or lack of, which they possess.  Many people know they need a first aid kit for their homes, their cars or their offices, but when it comes to picking the right one it becomes very frustrating.

The first thing I always suggest is to know what you can do medically.  Obviously, if you’re an EMT, nurse, or doctor you could go with one of the more elaborate first aid kits with suture kits, stethoscope and so on, but most of us don’t have that degree of medical training.  Unless you plan on becoming trained in these areas, I would say to eliminate that sort of kit from your thought process.

Personal EDC

Personal Every Day Carry Kit (EDC)

A lot of people do not know what EDC stands for.  In the survival/preparedness world, it means Every Day Carry.  Typically, this means things you chose to carry every day that would help you if a disaster struck you without access to your B.O.B. (Bug Out Bag).  This could be anything from your car breaking down and being stranded, to a sudden tornado or hurricane hitting your area.  Do not confuse the EDC kit with a BOB.  (Either a 72 hour BOB or a long-term BOB)  That is not what the purpose of an EDC kit is.  The purpose is simply to deal with everyday situations that might occur in combination with things like injury, outdoor preparedness, and protection.

Ok, I am blushing.  I made a classic mistake!!  I wrote an entire article on EDC items I carry as an example of an EDC Kit and forgot to elaborate on the most important item, my key ring.
